Our work in Dhinowda

Five programme areas, all run together with the villages they serve.

Overview

One problem with many faces

Sand, water, trees, jobs and knowledge are one chain in Dhinowda. If the dunes move, farms die. If farms die, families cut trees to sell charcoal. If trees go, the dunes move faster. Our five programmes cut that chain in five places at the same time.

Programme 01

Sand & Dune Control

This is our first job. Moving dunes are the biggest threat to Dhinowda, so most of our field work goes here.

What we do

  • Palm-frond and brush fences placed across the wind path
Sand & Dune Control Sand already at the walls
Programme 02

Environmental Protection

Protecting what is still standing costs far less than bringing it back. This programme keeps the rangeland, the water and the coast healthy.

What we do

  • Stopping charcoal burning and helping sellers find another trade
Environmental Protection Coast and rangeland we protect
Programme 03

Green Dhinowda

Green Dhinowda is our tree programme. The aim is a living green belt around the town and every village, cared for by the families next to it.

What we do

  • Village nurseries growing local, drought-hardy seedlings
Green Dhinowda What a green belt looks like
Programme 04

Community Awareness

A fence works only if people understand why it is there. This programme carries the message to every part of the district.

What we do

  • Village meetings before and after every project
Community Awareness What we are working towards
Programme 05

Economic & Marine Development

Dhinowda sits on a rich coast. If families can earn a fair living from the sea and from small trade, they stop cutting trees to survive.

What we do

  • Better nets, lines and safety gear for small boats
Economic & Marine Development Boats and traders at the landing site
